7 Tips for Picking a Wedding Venue

7 Tips for Picking a Wedding Venue

Without a doubt, one of the first (and most important) things that comes with wedding planning, is picking your venue. Whether on a beach, a vineyard, in a church, or ballroom; this decision will set the tone for the rest of your wedding. Since a venue is a must, securing it first will more firmly set in stone your actual wedding date.

Unless you've had a specific venue in mind for a while now, deciding on one (and which vibe you're going for) can be difficult. Starting your venue search early on in the planning process will not only give you a better chance of getting the date you want, but will also give you some time to view several different types of venues. This can help to give you a better idea of what you envision your big day to look like!

It is important to note that there are some SUPER important things to consider when checking out venues. Size, parking, and location can make or break a venue depending on your specific needs and wedding details.

Here are 7 things that can help guide you in picking your venue!

1. Cost

It is important to have at least an idea of what your budget will be before touring locations. Perhaps the most important detail (behind availability) is whether or not the location fits into your price range. When considering price, also take into mind that while some venues offer the bare minimum (the space only), others may include things like set up, linens, lighting and food. Some may even have some decorations that you can borrow. So, while some venues may appear more expensive up front, when you break it down you may actually be saving in the long run. If you REALLY want a certain venue but the price is just a bit too much, consider an off-season or Sunday wedding. This could help lower the cost some.

2. Capacity

By the time you start venue shopping, you should also have a general idea of how many people you will be inviting. A big venue with a small guest list will lead to lots of unused space and a venue too small will mean packing people in and, potentially, taking away some of the enjoyment.

3. Theme

Needless to say, if you want a black tie wedding, a beach location is most likely out of question. Whatever vibe you envision your decorations having, your venue should also have. If you don't like the rustic look, getting married in a barn is probably not ideal. The look of your venue should add to your decor, not make your decor look out of place.

4. Location

This one is especially important if you will have a lot of out of town guests. Some venues may offer accommodations for your guests, which is great! If they don't, however, you should take into consideration what is nearby. If your venue is secluded it may be difficult for guests to find accommodations. Also, consider the safety of your location. If you're getting married in the heart of a big city, consider how safe your guests will be getting to and leaving your wedding.

In another instance, if you are having a church ceremony and are just looking for a reception space make sure that the two locations aren't too far apart. A long drive can tire people out and also cuts into your party time!

5. Indoor AND Outdoor Options

Although you may have your heart set on an outdoor wedding, it is important to remember that weather is unpredictable. Take into consideration what the backup plan would be if your wedding day is a bit more stormy than you would like. Does the venue have an indoor space you could move to? Are tents available for outside use? These can all affect the feel of your wedding so make sure that you consider every possibility.

6. Other Vendors

Some locations will literally just rent you the building. Everything else is up to you to purchase/rent and bring in. On the other hand, some locations will require that you use their vendors. This could include food, alcohol, cake, or florists. Maybe thats what you want. If it, is great! You've just killed two birds with one stone. But if you want specific vendors make sure you pick a location that will accommodate that.

7. The Vibe

Lastly, how did you feel when you went to look at it? Could you envision your wedding there or was something just off? Trust your gut! They say when you know, you know. And trust me, you know. There are a lot of factors that come into play when choosing your venue but in the end, there will be no doubt in your mind when you've found the one (again!).
